What separates Amazon leadership principles from most companies values?
"๐๐ฏ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ต๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ ones"...
What separates Amazon Web Services (AWS) 17 leadership principles from most companies values?โจ
Most company values are displayed on a glossy wall, but not really lived in reality.
However, I think Amazon's 17 Leadership Principles diverge from typical company values (and the process for building them).
What I like about these 17 principles are how theyโre intentionally designed, serving as a ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป-๐บ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ for the business.ย โจ
All centred around their core focus: ๐ฏ
Customer obsession, and its mission: ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ฃ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ฉโ๐ด ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ต ๐ค๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ-๐ค๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ณ๐ช๐ค ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ข๐ฏ๐บ.
โจThey're weaved into the fabric of the business. Right from job advertisement, onboarding, day-to-day operations, and the boardroom ๐งต
The tenets donโt only clarify ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ข๐ต, they describe ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ธ in a few sentences.ย Enough nuance, but not too much. โจ
Perhaps though, the ingenuity lies in how it's anchored in history. You can trace the principles back to Jeff Bezosโ first letter to stakeholders in 1997.
"๐๐ฃ๐ด๐ฆ๐ด๐ด ๐ฐ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ค๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด" - the key thread in the letter ๐
Iโm pretty sure this artifactual letter isn't a side note. It's an intentional anchor that connects employees, and stakeholders, at an emotional level ๐คฒ
The principles are a clear statement of intent. This is the way we do things around here...โจ
...โunless you have another wayโ.ย A mantra that sits alongside the principles ๐๐ผโจ
An invitation to challenge, contribute, and innovate, encapsulated by the tenet to "๐ฉ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ค๐ฌ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ช๐ด๐ข๐จ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ".
Many lessons from this:
๐ก Have a very clear singular mission thatโs compelling and inspiring
๐ก Build principles with a clear intent, anchored in rich story and history
๐ก Describe the behaviours underpinning the principles
๐ก Live the principles with conviction everyday (and review)
๐ก Create an environment where people challenge the status quo
Great post byย Daniel Slater & James Houltonย always tells a good story around this.ย
